Mercury News: Push to lower blood alcohol limit for DUI drivers in California

Q: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. California DUI laws are among the toughest in the nation and yet increases in DUI crashes remain alarming. About 1,000 people die and more than 20,000 are injured each year in California because of impaired drivers.

The system isn’t working so we need tougher laws to solve the problem. This is the classic definition of insanity. People don’t bother to get ignition interlock devices because there is little chance of them being caught. Let’s try something that will really work.

A: Try this. Assemblywoman Autumn Burke, D-Inglewood, has introduced Liam’s Law, which would lower the blood alcohol content level for impaired driving from 0.08 to 0.05. The bill is named after Liam Kowal, a 15-month-old infant who was killed by an impaired hit-and-run driver in Hawthorne in 2016.
